Women Are Scary: The Totally Awkward Adventure of Finding Mom Friends

Published by Harper Collins Zondervan

Let’s see…this is the part where I convince you that you need this book.  This book will massage your feet.  This book will bring you a fuzzy blanket at the end of a long day of parenting your tiny little insanazoids.  I promise to make you snort laugh at least once.  After reading this book, you’ll rock jazz hands, be able to sing on-key, and never, ever have to fold laundry again.

Okay, they told me I’m actually supposed to tell you a little about the book.  Um, right.  Look.  Here’s the thing.  Too many of us women are frazzled and lonely, isolated in our minivans while schlepping bags, strollers, and munchkins to and fro across town.  It doesn’t have to be this way.

In this guide to “momlationships,” I use a dating analogy to take us “around the bases” to our home-run friendships, the ones that last a lifetime, not just a soccer season.  This is our journey to each other, to finding our people and being other people’s people, learning how to bless each other and not destroy each other.

It’s sometimes scary.  And always awkward.  Let’s have some fun.

“No one can make us quite as unsure about ourselves as another woman. And nothing can wound as much as the words that sometimes come from a friend. That’s why you need this book. Because if you’ve been burned by women and friendship you need the reminder that it’s worth it. Friendship is like oxygen for the soul and this is the handbook on how to overcome awkward and fall in love with friendship all over again.”

Jeannie Cunnion

Author of “Parenting the Wholehearted Child”

“Women are Scary is laugh-out-loud funny. But it’s so much more than that. It’s an honest exploration of the one thing so many moms fear—one another. And it’s an invitation to know and be known in this thing we call motherhood. Melanie is the real deal. Her humor, courage, and candor will inspire moms to “spur one another on” because, as Melanie writes, we aren’t “just moms” we are world changers, and we are better, so much better, when we are with and for each other.”

Sophie Hudson

Author of “A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet” and blogger at BooMama.net

“So the thing about Melanie Dale is that she is really, genuinely funny. I didn’t just smile when I read Women Are Scary: The Totally Awkward Adventure of Finding Mom Friends — I giggled. Chortled. Guffawed, even. But the other thing about Melanie Dale — and this is the part that gives her book so much substance – is that she is really, genuinely insightful. And while I wish this book had been around about ten years ago when I was in the throes of wondering why it sometimes seemed so difficult to connect with other mamas, I’m so grateful that Melanie’s book is right here, right now. It’s a fresh reminder that we’re not meant to walk through motherhood alone, and it made me more grateful than ever for my mama friends who were strangers to me a decade ago — but have long since taken up residence in the deepest part of my heart. I’m so thankful for Melanie’s humor, vulnerability, and honesty; women are going to be so encouraged by her words!”

Jamie C. Martin

Blogger at SimpleHomeschool.net and SteadyMom.com and author of “Mindset for Moms”

“In Women Are Scary, Melanie dares to put candid words to the thoughts we’ve all secretly had about the ups and downs of motherhood. With both snort-out-loud humor and refreshing honesty, she encourages us to speak the truth as well—to ourselves and to each other as we develop new momlationships.”

Melanie Shankle

New York Times bestselling author of “Sparkly Green Earrings”

Women Are Scary has given me the great gift of knowing I am normal.  Or at least semi-normal.  Melanie Dale, with her funny, engaging words, perfectly captures the angst and joy and awkward moments that come our way as we try to navigate the world of finding our friends amongst a sea of minivans and soccer games.  She will make you laugh out loud as you recognize pieces of yourself and, if you’re like me, you’ll find yourself nodding along until the last page when you close the book and breathe a deep sigh of relief that you’re not alone.”

Rebecca St. James

Singer, author and new mom

“Melanie Dale you are hilarious! Thank you for writing a book that not only made me laugh, but also inspired and encouraged me in my ‘momlationships’! Rock on sister.”

“I found a kindred spirit in the pages of Melanie Dale’s, Women are Scary.  She’s clever and funny and makes me feel more normal in all of the things that I’m certain probably make me weird. She reminds us that making new friends can be hard, feel scary, but is also one of the most rewarding steps onto a limb we’ll ever take. I laughed and cried and laughed some more…and then felt thankful that God gives us community and friendship to walk along this crazy road we call life.”

Susan Alexander Yates

Speaker and  bestselling author of many books including “And Then I Had Kids, Encouragement for Mothers of Young Children”

“Are you lonely too? With disarming honesty and humor Melanie walks you through specific steps to find that ‘mommy girl friend’ you desperately need. Buy this book for every young Mom you know. You will be giving her more than a book — you are giving her a guide to rich friendships.”
